Treatment for lipedema may include conservative approaches, such as medical compression therapy, dietary modifications, physical activity and, when appropriate, manual lymphatic drainage, as well as surgical treatment through liposuction. The most appropriate treatment depends on your individual needs. Speak with a qualified healthcare professional for a comprehensive assessment and personalized treatment recommendations.
The primary goals of lipedema treatment are to reduce pain and decrease the volume of the affected arms and/or legs. Conservative treatment typically involves Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), a combination of physical treatment approaches that may include manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, exercise therapy and skin care.
In Stage 1, seamless circular knit compression stockings may still be appropriate (for example, from Sigvaris). Circular knit compression stockings are seamless and are commonly used to treat vein disease and early-stage edema.
However, many specialists already recommend flat knit compression garments in Stage 1 (for example, OPTIFORM FLEX, HOLD or FEEL by Sigvaris). These garments should also be worn during physical activity whenever appropriate. Flat knit compression garments feature a seam and are primarily used to manage more advanced edema or when body shape varies significantly.
In Stage 2, flat knit compression garments with a seam are recommended (for example, OPTIFORM FLEX, HOLD or FEEL by Sigvaris). These garments should be worn daily and washed regularly.
If edema is also present, manual lymphatic drainage may be used as an additional treatment. However, because swelling associated with lipedema is generally less pronounced than in lymphedema, changes in limb volume are usually only minor.
If symptoms persist despite consistent conservative treatment, liposuction may be considered as a surgical treatment option. This procedure should only be performed by a healthcare professional with specialized training and experience in treating lipedema. Be sure to discuss your options with your healthcare provider and confirm that they have the appropriate qualifications and expertise. For the best possible outcome, conservative treatment should be continued both before and after liposuction. If secondary lymphedema is present, it should be managed before surgery.
Liposuction may help reduce pain, tenderness, bruising and swelling. In many cases, it may also reduce the need for conservative treatment, improve mobility and enhance quality of life.
